    What is conflict?

The word “conflict” refers to an open clash between two or more individuals or groups, caused by often incompatible feelings, opinions, or approaches to a given issue. Conflicts are caused by differences of opinion on social, political, and/or economic issues, and can occur at any level, from the individual to national or regional.

It is important to remember that conflict is a natural feature of human existence and is in itself not a negative dynamic. However, the ways in which conflicts are dealt with is very important. Conflict can lead to violence, antagonistic competition or even war; but it can also lead to positive changes and growth in a system or relationship. Understanding how to deal with conflict is often the difference between whether it will be a negative force of destruction or a positive force for change.
