Zimbabwe Finance Minister Tendai Biti Said Unscathed Following Road Collision
Biti, secretary general of the MDC grouping of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, was to be released late Wednesday from a private hospital in Harare where he was under observation for possible chest injuries from air bag deployment. Zimbabwean Finance Minister Tendai Biti escaped serious injury late Tuesday when the vehicle in which he was traveling from Chegutu to Harare was forced off the road by a truck that veered into the oncoming lane, said sources in his Movement for Democratic Change. Biti, secretary general of the MDC formation headed by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, was expected to be released late Wednesday from the Avenues Clinic in Harare where he was under observation for possible chest injuries from the air bag that deployed in the collision that sent the vehicle into a ditch.
Zanu-PF, MDC to meet to iron out their differences
Representatives of Zimbabwe's bickering political parties will meet today in the resort town of Nyanga to tackle their differences a week after President Jacob Zuma said they were committed to the success of the unity government. Negotiators from President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change were expected to tackle all outstanding matters related to equitable power sharing.
The third principal, Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara's breakaway MDC party, will also be represented. According to local media reports, the parties agreed, during Zuma's visit last week to finalise the appointments of provincial governors. They also reportedly agreed to deal with the status of Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Gideon Gono and attorney-general Johannes Tomana.
Court orders police to release confiscated torture photographs
High Court judge Justice Samuel Kudya on Wednesday ordered the police to release the 65 photographs of victims of the 2008 political violence that had been confiscated from Gallery Delta. This was after an urgent application was filed by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR). ZimRights information Officer Cynthia Manjoro confirmed the photos had been returned and that the exhibition was going to open at 6pm. At the time of broadcast the photo exhibition was set to be launched by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.
Two truckloads of police officers raided the premises of the Gallery Delta in Harare on Tuesday and confiscated the 65 photographs which were part of an exhibition entitled ‘Reflections’.
The organiser of the exhibition, Okay Machisa, the National Director of the ZimRights, was manhandled and briefly arrested. The civic leader was released after the intervention of the ZLHR.
